Turkey's first modern art museum Istanbul Modern’s new building which is designed by world star architect Renzo Piano was built within Galataport which is one of very important urban transformation and international cruise ship port project in Istanbul. After the commencement of design works in December 2016, the construction works started in September 2019. Museum building sits on first basement floor of 3 basement floor which commonly used by Galataport and has total 5 floors including, Basement, a mezzanine floor between basement and ground floor, ground floor and 2 floors above ground. The building has approximately of 18.000sqm closed area. The building is a volume above a recessed clear glass façade at the ground floor. A special formed metal panel facade plays with the reflections of the light and water of the Bosporus and gives the building a different appearance and vibrancy based on the movement of the sun. The escape stair routes from the upper levels are designed as exposed but nested in the building façade, accessible by a system of external walkways adding another layer of depth to the facade. The concrete column system is reinforced with steel cross bracings to perform appropriately in such a seismic area.
